School Field Trip Information
Teachers and students love our corn maze! Educators have discovered the
maze can be an invaluable learning tool. It not only assists in bringing
their students together; it also teaches them about the importance of
teamwork. Teachers have also found that by challenging the students both
physically and academically, they depart with a renewed sense of confidence
that will benefit them in their future endeavors.
The theme is the most important educational component of the maze. The theme
relates to each part of the maze from the pathways to our game sheets.
Students answer questions related to the theme by finding clues in the
corn. Our maze theme changes each year. From an academic perspective, our
storyboards easily meet the standards based curriculum under the reading
comprehension category.
During our hayrides we take a trip to our animal barn, and, if you so
choose, your class can visit our pumpkin patch so that each student can pick
their own pumpkin.
At your request, we can incorporate a standards-based curriculum specific to
your class’s current lesson plan. On our farm we have implemented several
soil conservation practices which fall under the category of Environmental
Studies. For example, Grade 1 Standard 6.0.B.1.a-c, we can discuss how all
of our manure is recycled by the process of composting, used on our organic
field production, and how this is beneficial to the environment. Another
example of Environmental Studies would be: Grade 5 Standard 6.0.B.1.a.b, we
can discuss how the agricultural community can make use of natural resources
to improve the environment. We also discuss how we assess and manage risk
to the environment. Our farm was patented in 1673, so there are Historical
Standards topics which we can discuss. Additionally, Life Sciences
Standards can be interjected through the discussion of how we handle our
crop production. We ask that the teachers who would like us to discuss a
Standards-Based curriculum speak with us prior to their field trip. We need
to know what grade the students are in and what topic would best fit their
lesson plan.
At Montpelier Farms, we want all of our visitors to have fun! Our mission
is accomplished when our patrons learn something new without even knowing
it!
We do request that you wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes since we
are a working farm. This helps to ensure your groups’ safety, and we’re
sure you will agree safety comes first!
